I was wracking my brain, trying to find a way for Canadian and Edmontonian women to stay connected during these trying times. I had the idea to launch the #inspiringcanadianwomen campaign. This campaign is a series of interviews with notable Canadian women, and it is off to a great start. I spoke with Councillor Sarah Hamilton, Producer Janet Hamley, winner of the Great Canadian Baking Show Nataliia Schevchenko, one of my personal pageant heroes and friends Miss Earth Canada Mattea Henderson, and philanthropist, musician and wife of Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson Sarah Chan. I also spoke with Miss World Canada 2019 Naomi Colford as well as Miss Teenage Canada 2019 Emma Jeapes. I was also very honoured to discuss the importance of essential workers and my essential worker campaign with President and Ceo of Alberta Health Services, Dr. Verna Yiu. I’ve also been able to speak with women in politics supporter and Parity Bot creator Lana Cuthberston, and Miss Supranational Canada 2019, Courtney Mandock. I learned so much from these incredible women and put together some of their best quotes from their interviews to inspire other women. Local magazines have expressed interest in publishing these articles and I can’t wait for all of you to see the finished project. Here are some of the inspiring quotes I collected over this past while, advice I hope to inspire and encourage other young women with!
“Be patient. We live in a world where there is a sense that your achievements have to come young and fast. If you cultivate wisdom and character and cultivate friendships, those are long term investments. Be patient, stand up for yourself, and be okay with letting mistakes go.” –Councillor Sarah Hamilton
“I really admire women who were able to forge through places where women were such a minority. Those trailblazer women who set a path that allowed us to walk smoother are the women that I really admire.” –Dr. Verna Yiu
“Where you start doesn’t determine where you end you up. My mom always encouraged me to go after my dreams and focus on doing my personal best. I would tell my younger self to ignore what other people think and any opinions they may have on my interests and what my heart wants to do. At the end of the day, other people’s opinions don’t matter, go after what you love and what you want to do.” –Naomi Colford
“It’s about what you believe in, it’s about having a message and having a platform that you can look up to. I find the biggest part of it is being able to have a platform in my community and reach out to others.” Courtney Mandock
If I was younger, I would do more for all my passions. I would recommend that everyone focus on their passions for something. We only have one life.” –Nataliia Schevchenko
“Be brave. Be transparent, trust your gut and surround yourself with good people. People who will be with you when you fall flat on your face but people who will also challenge you. All the other answers you are looking from will come from you.” –Sarah Chan
“I have to take a step back and go ‘no, I am incredible as who I am, I know my potential, why am I competing with myself?’”–Mattea Henderson
