My platform

The platform I have chosen is Cancer because I have lost family and people close to me to the disease. I lost my grandpa at the early age of 56 to a prostate cancer that was in remission and later diagnosed with a second cancer of the GI tract. I never did get to meet him as my mom was pregnant with me during his last months. This breaks my heart, to know he never got to meet me. My mom tells me he would hold his hand on her tummy and smile.

My Uncle Chris was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. It was misdiagnosed for so long that by the time they did diagnose him the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and later his brain. Melanoma is a very aggressive cancer so Uncle Chris did not have very long. He fought hard with natural treatments and had undergone a couple brain surgeries which turned his 6 months into a couple years. My Uncle passed away in his forties and left behind 2 young children. It was heartbreaking.

” When someone has cancer, the whole family and everyone who loves them does too.” -Terri Clark

We lost my other grandpa to Colon cancer that spread to the brain. He fought hard and went through a remission as well but we lost him a few months later.

“Dear Cancer, Thank you for making me stop and listen and remember what’s truly important. You can go now.”

In hopes to find a cure, I started a fundraiser for my 18th birthday this past May. I managed to reach my goal of 250$ thanks so all my supporters that donated to the cause.

Visiting Alberta Childrens Hospital

On June 19th I traveled to Calgary to visit the Childrens hospital. I stopped in the Cancer unit to donate a bag of stuffed animals for the children that visit there for chemotherapy or have to stay overnight for other issues. We were not allowed to meet with the children due to their compromised immune systems, however the staff were thrilled to accommodate my visit and accept the donations on their behalf. I was thrilled to make this appearance on behalf of Miss Teen Southern Alberta.

Thank you all for taking the time to read about my platform and why it is so important to me.

About Me…

Hello everyone! My name is Kimi Marie Rose Becker and I am the current reigning Miss Teen Calgary 2019. I am 16 years old and currently finishing my grade 11 year of high school as an AP and honours with the highest distinction student. I currently reside in Okotoks, Alberta and I am an Alberta girl born and raised! #AlbertaStrong

My Journey…

As a young, mixed-race woman (half-Filipino, half-Canadian), I always struggled with establishing where I belonged. The constant pressure from both sides of my cultures left me confused as to how I would define myself because of cultural differences. However, one thing that carried on from my Filipino culture is my love for pageantry. I began competing in pageants when I was 7 years old after years of begging my mom to allow me to compete. I ended up placing top 5 in my first pageant, Little Miss Calgary, and 1st Runner up in my second pageant. From there, my love for pageantry grew. My desire to compete carries on to this day and is the reason why I decided to compete in Miss Teen Calgary. After winning the title of Miss Teen Calgary 2019, I was presented with the opportunity to compete for Miss Teenage Canada and that has led me to where I am today!

My Platform…

As a teenager in high school, I have witnessed many of my classmates fall victim to peer pressure. I decided to promote Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) due to this peer pressure and the effects of it. My mission is to educate others about the destructive decisions they can potentially make while under the influence of drugs and alcohol or even the effects of merely driving distracted (e.i. on your phone). As someone who has witnessed these incidents first hand, I aspire to make a change in my community by hopefully teaching others about how to prevent these accidents from happening so that we may build a safer, stronger community. My passion for promoting Students Against Destructive Decisions has led me to become the president of the S.A.D.D. faculty at my school and has established me to be a progressive role model within my community.

Before May long weekend, S.A.D.D. encouraged others to sign a pledge to drive safe and sober!

I am also an advocate for women and girls to enter into STEM fields. As a student with an above 90% average and 4.0 GPA, I aspire to enter the field of Astrophysics in my future. My love for math and sciences has allowed me to encourage other young women and girls to follow their hearts, especially into STEM fields of employment despite them being male-dominated. I want to be able to teach young girls about entering STEM and defeating all stereotypes that may be put against them, many of which I have already faced or am yet to face. I aspire to be a role model for many of the young women who may not have one yet and want to follow in my footsteps.

My Interests…

Because my introduction post is fairly long already, I will keep this short and sweet! As previously mentioned, I have a passion for math and science. I spend most of my time, much to my friends dismay, studying and completing my homework (as boring as it sounds) as well as writing competitive math tests with my schools Mathletes club. Recently, my school placed 7th in the province for a competitive math test that was put on by the University of Waterloo. Along with my love for pageantry, I also love modeling and acting. Although I am petite, I have been modeling and acting since I was 7 years old! I have done a few small jobs in acting as well, starring in Heartland and Damnation, and I have competed nationally at Faces West twice!

This is me competing in a modeling contest in 2011!

That is all there is to me! Thanks for reading about me! – Kimi

Hello, my name is Sarah Hodder, and I am the title holder of Miss Teenage Medicine Hat 2019.

I am currently in my grad year in high school, and plan on pursuing Child and Youth Care Counselling in the fall. As a girl who’s never done a pageant, one might ask how I ended up participating in my country’s national teenage pageant. Kind of a funny story, I never intended on being in a pageant until I was applying for scholarships and stumbled across the application form. Next thing I knew, I was first runner up in my first ever pageant, and became hooked on the insane opportunities pageantry had to offer.

In my free time I like to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, participate in Me to We Club, workout, jamming out for a few while driving to a good hiking location, and camping with my family. As well, I love to read and write. I remember typing for hours while sitting on our floor heater as a kid writing stories whenever I wasn’t at dance class.

With my title, I hope to encourage youth and older teens to put down technology and pick up a book. Knowledge is the one thing no one can take away from you, and a woman can conquer the world when she puts her mind to it. In a society so focused on body image and social media, I want to serve as a reminder that true beauty is within and a follower count does not define who you are. As well, I want to spread awareness of bullying. My mother, being my role model, she always made sure I knew you are only as pretty as you treat people.

Follow me along my pageant journey, as I plan to make the best of such an exciting and unique opportunity.

I will be graduating grade eight and moving to sports high school which I will be partaking in a dance program this upcoming year. I am an official candidate for Miss Teenage Canada. I also support the Breast Cancer Society because I have had a close personal loss from it. Some of the things that I enjoy are modeling, acting, dancing competitively, singing, swimming, paddleboarding, boating, and many more. Pageants are a way for kids, teens, and adults to get out of their comfort zone and practice their public speaking, interview skills, and runway walking.

First of All..

So first off I have lived in Alberta all my life so I am super excited to be one of the girls representing this amazing province at Miss Teenage Canada!! I have never participated in a pageant before so being able to go to nationals is pretty cool! When I first signed up for Miss Teenage Alberta I had no idea it was going to be as much fun as it was. All the beautiful young women I met were truly inspirational. I am really looking forward to meeting more of these wonderful girls in Toronto, and sharing this amazing journey with them!

Intro to Me…

A little bit more about me as a person though. One of the things I am most proud about myself is my artistic abilities. I absolutely love anything art related. It is one of my biggest passions. Mostly because it has created so many opportunities for me and has opened many doors for building my future. I use art as a tool to get more involved with things going on in my community. I participate in things like fundraisers by donating my artwork and I also share my knowledge with kids and teach them how to do their own kind of art.

My Artwork

As a student in high school I have always tried to remain involved with things going on. I was a competitive swimmer on the school swim team, I participated in Business Case Competitions at universities in western Canada, achieved honors, I volunteer as often as I can, I am senior editor of the yearbook and of course try to do as much with art as I can. Aside from school activities I love being outside. I do things like go kayaking, hiking and camping as much possible . I live on a farm so all these things come pretty easily to me as I do not have to go very far to do them. My family just has a hobby farm with some horses, dogs and cows. It is not a lot but it keeps us busy!

Picture Intro!

Lastly..

Most of my hobbies consist of academics, visual arts and the outdoors. I have not done a lot in terms of performing arts, such as, acting, singing or dancing. I have done some modelling and public speaking but that is about it, so all of this stuff is definitely going to be new to me. But I am so happy to be doing something new and outside my comfort zone.

Till next time! – Shay 😀

Hi, my name is Alyssa and I am the current Miss Teen Southern Alberta 2019. I am so excited and thankful for this opportunity. I have already met so many fantastic people and I’m looking forward to meeting many more.

My story

Participating in this pageant means so much to me because it allows me to showcase my new found confidence. Growing up I struggled to read and was diagnosed with Attention Deficit and a learning disability. By Grade 4, I was just learning to read and was way behind my classmates and friends. This struggle went on for years as I persisted to get my reading level up to my current grade. My self esteem was low and I always felt like I didn’t fit in. Eventually, after years of hard work and extra hours on essays that took my classmates half the time, I graduated Grade 12 and have been accepted to Lethbridge College for the fall. This pageant will allow me to grow even more as a person and allow me to be an example to other kids or teens struggling with their self esteem or coping with a learning disability.

My platform

I have chosen The Cancer Society as my platform. I chose this because I have lost many loved ones to the disease. Both my grandfathers and my Uncle all struggled with the disease and I had to watch them in pain, scared and deteriorate before my eyes. I hope I can at least make a small difference for this terrible disease.

About Me

One thing you should know about me is I’m very creative and can spend many hours painting, drawing or creating. When I was in Grade 4 I had some art work hung in the Lethbridge Art Gallery. I was very proud of this accomplishment and it became the stepping stone to my love of art. I recently painted a canvas and my mom loved it so much she hung it in our living room.

My artwork

My other love is dance. I only started 4 years ago and intended to only take Hip Hop but after one year of dance, I was hooked. The last 3 years I have taken on other types of dance and loved to dance whenever I could. I have fond memories of all the girls I danced with and will always remember the fun times we had at competitions.

My friend Kennedy and me at competition

I am excited to represent Southern Alberta in Toronto and hope for all of your support.

With many thanks, Alyssa!
